Recent Sale of Little Mountain Property
One of Skagit Land Trust’s goals is to ensure livable cities with green-connector parks and open space near our urban centers through partnership projects. Examples of our work on this goal in the Mount Vernon area include the protection of 376 acres on Barney Lake on the edge of Mount Vernon, acting as a key partner in protecting Big Rock Park in the city’s urban growth area, and holding a conservation easement on 36 acres adjacent to the south border of Little Mountain City Park, which features public parking and trails that connect to the park.
On Monday, July 20th, Skagit Land Trust became aware that a 10-acre parcel of land adjacent to the north side of Little Mountain City Park was sold to a local logging company. As our population grows and our climate changes, our cities must conserve expansive and easy to access natural areas like Little Mountain. The intact forest found on Little Mountain is important for wildlife habitat, recreation, natural water storage, climate adaptation, scenic beauty, and more. This parcel of forest land is important to our community.
Skagit Land Trust is working to support the City of Mount Vernon’s efforts to explore options for the future of this land to benefit the public for all generations.
