Skagit Land Trust Welcomes New Stewardship Director

Skagit Land Trust is delighted to welcome Loren Brokaw as our new Stewardship Director. Born and raised in Stanwood, Loren has fostered a lifelong connection to the region. He earned a Bachelor of Science in Aquatic and Fishery Sciences from the University of Washington. He has since gained over two decades of local habitat restoration and land management experience.
Before joining our team, Loren spent 14 years working for Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW). As the agency’s North Puget Sound Wildlife Program Manager, Loren led a 28-member wildlife team across the region, guiding decisions on wildlife management and land stewardship. He also served as the Program’s liaison to the Point Elliott Treaty Tribes, coordinating wildlife conservation and management priorities.
In an earlier role as WDFW’s North Puget Sound Restoration Project Coordinator, Loren tackled some of the state’s most complex habitat projects. These included the Leque Island Estuary Restoration Project, a 250-acre estuary restoration that had drawn significant community opposition, litigation threats, and even federal funding withholding before Loren became involved. He was able to lead thirty diverse stakeholders, turning that opposition into broad community support and carrying the project through to construction in 2019.
Loren feels that hands-on land conservation is where he belongs. “I believe conservation and habitat restoration are the most important tools we have to ensure future generations will be able to enjoy the extraordinary ecosystems and resources that people love about Skagit County,” Loren shared.
As Stewardship Director, Loren will oversee the long-term care of the lands that Skagit Land Trust helps protect. Loren’s educational background and local experience with landowners, tribal partners, and local communities will help to ensure that the lands we love continue to provide healthy habitat and public benefit for generations to come.
“Loren’s blend of on-the-ground restoration experience and proven ability to build trust with landowners, tribal partners, and local governments is exactly what our stewardship program needs as we continue to grow,” says our Executive Director, Molly Doran.
Please join us in welcoming Loren Brokaw to Skagit Land Trust!
